Choose Sign up, give an email address and a password, and confirm your email using the six-digit code we send you. You can also sign up with Google, in which case there is no password to remember.

You need to be at least 18 to use Fancia.

It usually takes under a minute. If it has not appeared, check your spam or junk folder, and search for the sender rather than scrolling, since some clients file it oddly.

If it still is not there, request a new code. If several attempts fail, email support@fancia.co.uk from the address you signed up with and we will confirm it manually.

Only a name. A photo, a short bio, your location and a few interests make a real difference to what Fancia can suggest, but you can add them whenever you like and change them later.

Your date of birth is used to confirm you are an adult and to show your age to other members. You can hide your age in Settings.

Events are things happening at a time and place that you can go to. Groups are ongoing communities around a shared interest. Venues are places that host events. Match suggests events and people you might get on with.

By default your name, photo, bio, location label, interests and posts are visible to other members. Your email address, password and exact date of birth are never visible to anybody.

In Settings you can set your profile to private, and separately hide your age, your gender, the groups you are in and the events you are going to.

Go to Settings and then Edit profile. Changes appear straight away, though a new photo can take a moment to reach everybody because images are cached.

Yes. In Settings turn off friend requests and nobody will be able to send you one.

Use Discover or Events, then set the area you want to search and how far you are willing to travel. You can let the app use your device location, or type in a place instead. Filter by date and by interest to narrow things down.

Open the event and request a place. Some events accept you immediately; others need the organiser to approve you first, in which case you will hear back once they have looked at it. You can bring guests where the organiser allows it.

If your plans change, cancel your place so that somebody else can have it.

Choose Create event, then give it a name, description, date and location. You can pick a venue, drop a pin on the map, or type an address. Events can repeat on a schedule if it is a regular thing.

You can require approval for attendees, cap numbers, and add interests so the right people find it.

Organisers can change or cancel their own events. Fancia is not the organiser, so please contact them through the event or by message if you need to know more.

No. Fancia only takes payment for Premium subscriptions. If an organiser charges for an event, that arrangement is between you and them, so be careful and never send money to somebody you do not know.

Groups are ongoing communities. Join one to see its posts and events. Some groups admit anybody, others are approved by an admin.

Group admins can post, run events for the group, and manage who is in it.

Hand the group over to another member first, otherwise it is left without anybody able to run it. If you try to delete your account while you are still the only admin of a group, we will tell you and give you the choice of handing it over or going ahead anyway.

A venue is a place that hosts events. Whoever creates it can add other members to its team so they can list events there too.

Match looks at the interests you have chosen, the events and groups you have joined, the area you are browsing in, and who has liked you. It then puts together an ordered list of suggestions.

It is only a list of suggestions. Nothing about your account is decided automatically, and none of it is used for advertising.

They are not told straight away. If they like you back it becomes a match, you are both told, and you can start messaging. Where you have interests in common, Fancia may suggest events that would suit you both.

Yes. Turn Match off in Settings and we stop making suggestions for you, and you stop appearing in other members' suggestions.

Members you have matched with, and members you are connected to. You can also contact a group's admins to ask about the group.

Your messages are not visible to other members. They are stored and delivered by Stream Chat, a specialist provider working on our behalf, and are covered by our Privacy Policy. They are not end-to-end encrypted, which means we are able to look at a conversation if we have to investigate a report of abuse.

You can delete your own messages. Bear in mind the other person may already have read it, and it may still exist in a notification on their device.

Go to Settings and then Notifications. You can choose separately for matches, messages, activity on your posts, event suggestions and event reminders.

Check that notifications are allowed for Fancia in your phone's own settings, as well as in Fancia's Settings. On Android, also check that battery optimisation is not stopping the app in the background.

Signing out and back in refreshes the connection between your device and our servers, which fixes most cases.

£5.99 a month including VAT, with one month free if you have not subscribed before. It renews each month until you cancel.

Where you cancel depends on where you subscribed. If you subscribed on the website, cancel in Settings. If you subscribed in the iOS app, cancel through your Apple subscriptions. If you subscribed in the Android app, cancel through Google Play.

Cancelling stops the next payment, and you keep Premium until the end of the period you have already paid for.

No, and this catches people out. A subscription bought through Apple or Google keeps renewing until you cancel it with them, even after your Fancia account has gone. Cancel the subscription first, then delete the account.

We do not refund part of a month you have already paid for, but that does not affect your legal rights, and if you cancel within 14 days of first subscribing we will refund you less an amount for the days you had access.

Purchases made in the apps are refunded by Apple or Google under their own policies, so ask them first, and tell us at support@fancia.co.uk if they will not help.

Email support@fancia.co.uk with the name of the member or a link to the event, group or post, what happened, and roughly when. Screenshots help. We review every report and will tell you the outcome.

Depending on what we find we may warn the member, remove what they posted, or close their account. For anything involving threats, fraud or children we act immediately and may involve the police.

Meet in a public place the first time and stay in public. Tell somebody where you are going and who you are meeting. Make your own way there and back.

Never send money to somebody you have met online, whatever the reason given, and do not share your home address, financial details or identity documents. If you feel uneasy, leave.

If you are in immediate danger, call 999.

No. We do not carry out identity checks, background checks or criminal record checks, and we cannot confirm that members are who they say they are. Please use your judgement.

Choose the forgotten password link on the sign-in screen and we will email you a code. The code is only valid for ten minutes, so use it while you are there, and request a new one if it expires.

If you signed up with Google there is no Fancia password to reset. Sign in with Google instead.

On the website go to Settings and then Account; in the apps go to Settings. You will be asked to confirm, because it cannot be undone.

Deleting your account immediately and permanently removes the details that identify you, along with your photos, your messages, your friendships and your matches. Posts and comments you wrote stay on Fancia but are no longer connected to you and appear as coming from a deleted member. Our Privacy Policy sets this out in full.

If you are the only admin of a group, we will ask you to hand it over or to confirm that you want to go ahead anyway.

Yes. Email support@fancia.co.uk and we will send you a copy of the personal information we hold about you within one month. There is no charge.

Email support@fancia.co.uk and tell us what you were doing, what you expected and what happened instead. Say whether you were on the website, Android or iOS, since that usually narrows it down quickly.
